Bunker PLC - An immersive experience in a world war two bunker in East London

Bunker PLC- Creative directors Olivia Bellas and Joanna Shaw. My role - Sound installation & sound design

Blending sci-fi and climate change themes, this installation invited the audience to explore Bunker PLC, the corporation of the future, set in the unique surroundings of a real-life World War II bunker venue in Dalston.

Inspired by a report issued for the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills, this piece focused on the daily working life of a not too distant future. Through the use of sensory interaction and audiovisual effects, Bunker PLC offered a glimpse into the working context of 2041. Equipped with a torch and waterproofs for shoes, audience members embarked on their own journey through this space. They were introduced to the mythology of Bunker PLC and various scenarios of humankind’s controlling of the natural world – from Weather Modification Police to vertical farming and the development of genetics.

Bunker PLC deals with the daily conditions of our lives in just 20 years’ time, focusing on links between ourselves and the world around us, questioning our vision of the future while also offering an optimistic view on how we can deal with current environmental challenges.

The audience was taken around in small groups and the whole experience lasted approximately 45 minutes.

My role was to immerse the audience in these unique spaces across 3 interconnected rooms. In one room the audio was used to take people deeper inside the story and help to set up the next phase of the journey. The middle room audio response to the scenarios, spaces and themes as sound design/installation.

First put on in 2011, it then re-opened a decade later in 2021 utilising a word of mouth policy to spread the news. This approach minimised power and resources of devices and social media, to relate to the projects wider environmental concerns, whilst also nurturing a human-centric response that tied into what Bunker PLC felt the answer to our problems were: More connection, understanding, inspiration and action.
